King Holiday 2023 – The government has announced an extra holiday to mark the coronation of King Charles III next year.

Downing Street said the UK public holiday would fall on Monday, May 8, following the coronation at Westminster Abbey two days earlier.

Rishi Sunak said the day will be an opportunity for families and communities across the country to come together to celebrate.

The announcement followed calls by Conservative MPs for the government to move the early May holiday from 1 May to coincide with coronation weekend or declare an extra public holiday.

Sunak said: “The coronation of the new monarch is a unique moment for our country.” In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional UK-wide holiday next year.

“I look forward to seeing people coming together to celebrate and honor King Charles III by participating in local and national events across the country in his honor.

Honoring And Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day On Campus

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Oliver Dowden, said the coronation, on Saturday 6 May, would combine “the sacred and the solemn, but it is also a celebration”.

Charles will be anointed with holy oil, given an orb, crown ring and scepter, before being crowned with St Edward’s Crown and blessed in a ceremony led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Queen Consort will also be anointed with holy oil and crowned, just as the Queen Mother was when she was crowned Queen in 1937.
